Gdes2014 Student Rough Work for TNA Lookover

Here's a more expansive set of student rough work from those working on the TNA 'Significant People' project  this week.

Monday Group (quick snapshot examples)

Rosie Mullender

I have attached my mood boards and a set of layout ideas here, so you have them to send. If you can let me know your thoughts on them that would be appreciated.

Tutor Andy: Good progress Rosie - loving the mood boards and your layouts show both how the activities might work and a useful visual on possible layouts.. Can I suggest that you think columns and grids for next week's session with your roughs and also how colour might work on these too. Good progress though Rosie..

Client Rachel: Really like mood boards and style, and ideas for activities also look appropriate and engaging for children. How might you incorporate a TNA document for use in your design?

Chloe Dunford
My basic idea is to make my book resemble a WW2 propaganda poster (Rosie the riveter etc) I wanted to try to mimic something authentic but with added colour. I chose a range of activities to put in there and each part will look like it’s been collaged onto a pinboard, so it will be colourful and therefore appeal to ks1. I’m thinking of adding a character to talk the children through the activities and information, this is either going to be the people themselves (Noor Kahn and Amy Johnson) or a rat from TNA.

Tutor Andy: I can see a basic idea of possible layouts here Chloe - definitely some progress made.. I like the 'stuck in' scrap book style you seem to suggest here - it's informal and rough and I think we've had success with that style in the past. For next week can you make sure that you've moved these onwards so that they show how your ideas here might fit in columns and grids as well as what kind of colour combinations you might use.. Particularly like the illustrated headings on these spreads - always works well..

Client Rachel: Really like the idea of pinboard approach and way in which TNA’s original documents will also feature. Also like idea of rat character being narrator and talking children through the different activities and inidviduals.

Dominik Mork
No supporting wording supplied.

Tutor Andy: It's very clear that you've focussed on the 3D aspect of this brief and I really like what you've created - that's clearly taken some time to do. I've had my wife the teacher look at it and she feels that it might be ok for KS1 but that you might need to have 'help from teacher' with cutting out and outting together as there's a few complicated aspects that they might not quite understand. Otherwise I can see that you've got some basic ideas for layouts here but I think it's now time to put more time into this aspect so that for next week's session you can show how they'd work in a column and grid layout and how colour might be used potentially. If your spreads are as great as your 3D elements though Dominik then this promises much!

Client Rachel: Great ideas for fun activities e.g. wordsearch, cracking the coded message and the 3D tank. Be great to think about how some of the TNA documents might be included and how you’ll approach telling the children a bit about the lives of Charles Dickens/ Noor Inayat Khan?

Lauren Mealins
No supporting wording supplied.

Tutor Andy: Some really lovely progress here Lauren and it's clear that you've put time and effort into getting to this point - good work.. Your illustrations for characters hold much promise and your cover ideas are well rendered and thought through too. You've remembered the 'this book belongs too' element too (they love that personalisation and badges for progress etc). If your inner pages are as well thought through as the covers here then these outputs promise much! If you can think columns and grids and then colour refs for the inner pages for next week then I think this work could really shine next week.

Client Rachel: Your cover ideas are beautiful (the illustrations of Nelson Mandela and Churchill are amazing), and the cover is really engaging and would make a child want to open the pages to find out more! I also like the idea of the cut-out character. It would be good to think about how you might tell the history of these significant individuals now, using a couple of TNA’s documents along with some fun activities.

Megan Bailey
My resource would be based around spies and being fearless. Amy Johnson and Noor Inayat Khan are in a top secret mission where they need help (from 5 to 7 year olds). Join them and a pigeon/rat (depending on what I can draw the best) as they learn and do activities. Learn to make a paper aeroplane, send secret messages with invisible ink, decode a secret message to find out what needs to be coloured in, help with directions and more! The activities end in a badge you can colour in for the bravery doing tough challenges.

Tutor Andy: I've fed back in emails already Megan but the general feedback would be that you've some wholly appropriate and lovely ideas for activities here. The side that needs further focus now is the creation of the individual A4 pages - covers and inner pages etc.. It all holds much potential Megan - looking forwards to seeing how those lovly activoty ideas translate to those inner pages for next week. Please remember to work to a column grid too.

Client Rachel: Lovely ideas for activities here and great that you’ve pulled out the theme of women being fearless and brave! The morse code idea is a good one for Noor Khan, or you could even include a cypher activity here? Perhaps think about some of the original documents and how these can be used by the children to find out about these two women, as well as feed into the creative activities?

Beth Matthews
These are my rough sketches. The William Shakespeare page has a fact file about him, underneath is a word search where you must find a couple of words that Shakespeare came up with. Then a did you know and an image to colour in. The Charles Dickens page has a fact file about him, then to relate to Oliver Twist which he wrote I did a maze type game to get the food to Oliver. Then underneath is a game where you match words which relate to Charles to the pictures and a factory to colour in at the bottom relating to victorian times. The other image is a colouring and drawing activity as Charles came up with many fictional characters it gives the child a chance to create their own characters.

Tutor Andy: Lots of great potential here Beth.. Your characters work well in taking the viewer around the activities you've suggested. I rally like the illustrated header text and summary of the individual too - a nice approach. What I think this needs now is to look at columns and grids and working these int oa logical column layout (please see last session's pres as a reminder if needed). It's also be really good to see olour ideas worked in here for next week - make sure you work it all out on paper first though as your Mac or PC won't do the thinking for you - just what you ask it to do..

Client Rachel: I love the use of fact files (could you use an image of an original document as a first activity about each person – what can you find out? And then lead into the fact files?) I think the activities look brilliant and really engaging, and I like how you’ve used the TTC mice to guide the children around.

Carys Preddy

For this idea I wanted to incorporate the fields of work of both of my significant people, which is a pilot for Amy Johnson and a spy for Noor Khan. This would help give the children an idea of what they are going to read and with it being a fun cover, with a plane wearing a hat, this also could help encourage the kids.

For this back cover it keeps the more fun element of my plane wearing a hat front cover. Unlike the other back cover there's no activity on it, it's just there for the design. I think it would suit well in the comedy theme with the use of bright and bold colours to draw the eye.

For these pages they contain the same activities from the ones above just the overall layout and look is different. Everything will all look like it's either pinned taped or clipped onto the page. The look of the report will stay the same with the layout but there will look like there are papers behind it.

I want the pages to seem like their going through the classified file to match with the front and back cover of my first idea. Elements on the page will look like they've been tapes, pinned and clipped into the book. I want the first page to appear similar to a suspect/victim file with a picture of said person then a quick summary of information about them to keep with the file like layout. Page colours would only include colours like white, cream, beiges and browns.

Tutor Andy: You've got a good blog coming along there Carys and I've lifted a couple of pages from it and some text to put here for the clients to see. There's some good simple ideas developing here on these examples.. What I think we need to see for next week (either in session or you via the BB stream) is how these key ideas might start to look in a column grid (see last session's presentation for ref if needs) and also what kind of colour ideas you might use from here onwards.. Make sure you work it all out in detail on paper first and any work you then do on a mac will be that much simpler and easier to undertake..

Client Rachel: Really like the cover with the incorporation of two characters into an eye-catching and fun image. Also like the idea of the impression of things being taped onto the page – think this will work well with combination of digitised images of documents and illustrations. Will you use image of Noor Khan’s original report here? You could get children finding out simple things from this as a starter activity?

Josh Allan

Tutor Andy: I can see your ideas coming along here now Josh in terms of both possible layouts and possible activities. I like the bursting in to the A4 pages of the significant people - possibly with a 'top fact' comment or similar in particular. Had you considered whether your characters might talk the children through the activities too maybe? I think your next step is to think in terms of working to columns and grids - make sure that your covers and inner activity A4 pages are working to grids (see the pres on BB from last session if you need a reminder). Colour is the other thing we need you to be thinking about too - make sure it's there on paper first as when we assess we'll be looking for that step by step set of sketch developments from rough thumbs up to worked through A4 pages with colour refs on them and in grids. This all holds much potential thought Josh, looking fwds to seeing your devts next week..

Client Rachel: I love the idea of the characters in a cartoon style and telling the children about their lives – agree with Andy, would be great if they also introduced the children to the different activities! The activities are really good and really important that you’ve focused on a range of different types of activities (design football kit etc. and not just writing tasks). How can you incorporate some of the original TNA docs into your designs?

Oliver Wigley-Mattheison

The first image here I was looking to an activity which was ladders and canes, the page after was questions that would be answered for older or able school children.

The next picture is for the second chosen person with the character which can be coloured in and information, I also thought about maybe cut out the first aid box. I’ve added little illustrations to keep the kids busy. The idea was to have different parts of the hall way the character would walk down to keep a flow of pages. Each page would have a different type of task with different illustrations on. I thought this would be a good idea as different school children like different things. It would also keep them busy as there would be a lot to look at.

Tutor Andy: You'd done lots of ideas when we saw you last Oliver so I've isolated a couple of them here to quickly comment on. The strongest A4 page is your cover I think with clear characters and an idea of what activities might happen on this page and others. You'd benefit from adding annotations to these though just so that it's a little cleare what specific things you plan on them. Your ideas abut cut outs would work wrell too I'm sure. Children at KS1 love cutting out and sticking things down (with teacher help). I like th way your characers burst into pages - maybe explaining a fascinating fact or similar (like Rattus Rattus would do on Horrible Histories). the next step is to take these to column and grid layouts now (see the last pres we did this week for a reminder if needed). Also colour, work out what's going to be in colour via the mood bosrd you've created ideally. Looking forwards to seeing these evolved firther next week whn we catc hup with our live client Rachel.

Client Rachel: Really like the page with Florence Nightingale and I also like the idea of the game of ladders and canes for the children to find out information. Would be good to think about where/ how images of an original document might feature and how you could tie an activity in with these?

Callum Summerfield
No supporting wording supplied.

Tutor Andy: I really like the illustration style that you're suggesting here Callum. Your layouts start to show what elements might go where on the A4 sheets and you've got some good annotations that help explain further what could happen on the activity pags themselves. There's a hint that you might be using columns and grids here so I think the next steps for next session are to make sure it's clear what th activity pages etc will look like on a column grid of your own deciding (remember we covered the basics again on this last session). Do make sure that your activities are thought through here too - there's some really lovely examples now here from many of your peers if you need to get an idea of what others are doing too. Colour ideas are also the next step - use the mood boards you created to help you decide on colours and visual treatments of those rough layouts.. Make sure it's all worked out on paper first as intricately as possible so that it's a breeze when you come to create things on screen.

Client Rachel: Really like the designs here for Walter Tulle – the way you’ve set out the page gives scope to include some of the images of original documents as well as illustrations. I’m very happy to also help/ suggest ideas for activities and there is a good Walter Tulle resource on our website too – I can send across the link if helpful.

Yanina Gancheva
I illustrated the characters that are to appear in my activity book and mind-mapped some activity ideas based on known facts about Noor Khan.

Tutor Andy: You've some nice basic character refs coming on Yani here but I think you'd recognise that you ned to spend some time now bringing your sketches up to the level of many of your peers on this page.. To do so you'll need to show us what kinds of activities you'd have on inner A4 pages and how your inner opages might adhere to a column and grid layout (see our pres from last session if you need a reminder on that). If your inner spreads start to appear as good ad your characters then this promises to be some nice work.. Look forwards to seeing more next week when we catch up and hear from your client.

Client Rachel: I really like the illustration of Dickens and some of his characters! I also like the start of your activity ideas for Noor – a crossword puzzle, spy code etc. It would be good to see how you might use of the original documents to steer your ideas too.

Jess Weaver
Here's some thumbnails/roughs.

I took these further and made them into sort of a visual corkboard?

it details what activities I'm planning and what textures I want to apply, as well as determined layout and what illustrations I will be producing.

Here is what visual research I followed through on over the week:

I also did some experiments over progress week weighing up how exactly I'd be producing and refining the illustrations for the book I weighed up adobe illustrator (inkscape)  v.s adobe photoshop (clip studio paint), (Illustrator), (photoshop)

I did colour experiments of these, they're on my blog too.

Tutor Andy: Jess these roughs are some of the best workings I've seen on this module - really, really lovely work - there's huge potential with these ideas here. You've explored some great characters here as well as ideas for activitis and elements on the various pages.. I think some more focus from here on inner activity pages layouts is the obvious next step really - do remember what we were saying about the importance of columns and grids too.. Lovely work Jess, really impressed, well done..

Client Rachel: Beautiful illustrations and I think the lay-out is really engaging and would work well having a combination of TNA’s images of documents and your beautiful illustrations. I can see some of your activity ideas coming together too – would be great to hear how you’d plan to incorporate any original document images into the design too.

Brenner Dickenson
This week, I spent my time getting a better idea of what I wanted my interpretations of Florence and Walter to look like. I wanted to stylise them slightly but not so much that they took on a too-simple or chibi-like appearance. I began by working from reference ( which was more challenging than usual given the lack of photos available due to their era,) then started to work with a more imaginative input, also copying their signatures for inspiration for my font selection later on in the process. I also began planning my activities, settling on a mixture of ‘fun’ and introspective thought. The structure I wanted to follow was a question to encourage the children to consider what they might already know about the topic, an interactive activity that gives some more context, then a creative activity or a chance to reflect.

Tutor Andy: Some lovely characters coming along here Brenner - character devt is clearly a real strong point of yours.. What I think you need to focus on now from here though is the potential cover and inner pages using a column grid layout (see last session's pres on BB). I think many are thinking colour refs now too and I feel that you too should be exploring what colour refs might be used on your pages. You can use the mood boards you'vedone I suspct top help with that thinking too. Keep up the good work, look forwards to seeing more worked through inner activity pages next week.

Client Rachel: Stunning illustrations of Florence Nightingale and Walter Tulle, and I also think that the way you’re approaching the activities – question, interactive activity and creative activity – is a brilliant approach. If you can incorporate an image of an original document, perhaps in your interactive activity, that would be great.

Krystina Davis
No supporting wording supplied.

Tutor Andy: Clear, well executed visuals coming along here Krystina.. You don't supply a description like many of your peers so with their roughs but you do have a couple of basic pointer notes on the visual. Some lovely character development here, good that you've been thinking about possible colourschemes and I can see that you've been experimenting with possible activities here too. Timelines are popular and could work great - you could even turn them into a learning activity with 'can you find where (this) goes on the timeline'? Join the dots and 'spot the difference' all simple ideas but suitable for the age grouping too. It'd be good to see these in more detail next session  with a clearer idea of how they fit into a grid layout and maybe how the rough ideas for activites m,ight look a little more developed from this here.. Lots of potential thought Krystina here..

Client Rachel: Really beautiful illustrations, with lovely calm colour palette, and great suggested activities with the word search, spot-the-difference etc. I agree with Andy re the timeline, you could turn this into an activity and perhaps have pictures or events that they can put in the right place on the timeline?
Really interested to know how you’re going to convey information about the significant people in your design and how you might also include a couple of original TNA document images?

Adam Johnson
No suporting wording supplied.

Tutor Andy: You don't supply a description of your plans here Adam as your peers did so there's a limit that I can glean from these examples. Irrespective the elements supplied do hold some merit and do go some of the way to showing what kind of activities you think might be appropriate. I'm assuming that you'll show next week how the titles, subtitles and small chunks of information for the children are integrsted a little more into the pages as well as an idea of how these work on grids along with some colour refs.. Try to work out as much as possible on paper here Adam - the mac will only do what you tell it to do really - it can't do your thinking - that all needs to be down here on paper so that when we assess we can se a clear devt paper trail before your final screen designs are evolved.. Lots of potential though here - just need to see it evolved more for next week really.

Client Rachel: Like the activity idea of creating the other half of the image (although bear in mind that they are quite young children so might not draw the other side of the face that remotely matches the first half!). Really love the map activity with the image of the plane and the idea that the children fill in missing places and dates – they might need some additional information to help them do this and perhaps some clues? So you could include a list of the different places for example? Pokemon card idea for Walter Tull is a good one too. How are you going to include some of the information that the children will need about Walter Tull and Amy Johnson, and how might you incorporate an original TNA document image into your ideas? Could you have some activities about finding out about Tull and Johnson from the original documents?

Jamie Evans
This is where I'm at in regards to Design and development. So I'm at the stage of knowing in what I want to take further for each page spread for each person. I know which style in what I want to take further for my front cover and back cover.

Tutor Andy: Much in the way of good thinking re activities here Jamie.. It's quite easy to see your thinking too as you include clear annotations with your rough work which means that when we look back at the 'paper trail' when we assess that it'll be as clear as possible what you were thinking at which point of your devt process.. Do remember to think grids here too and look forwards to seeing how some of these might look on paper in colour maybe next week.

Client Rachel: Really like the idea of information pages on Churchill and Shakespeare and the Fun Facts boxes too – children will love these! It’s great that you have some fun activities e.g. the quiz page and build a plane. It would be good to now think about how you might use some of the original TNA document images in your design – could these be incorporated into the information pages and particular parts of the documents zoomed in on or highlighted for relevant information?

Hope Whitehouse
So far I've sketched out some simple layouts for the main activities I want to use. I have also experimented with the different layouts of these activities on a page, alongside images and illustrations. I have also drafted up my final page spreads, with my front cover concept. I have also attached my blog link so far.

Tutor Andy: Some great progress here Hope, you've got some really well thought-through activities here that I can see working as you progress things and I can already start to see how the visual treatment/styles might work too with the mockup early cover idea supplied.. Suggests would include to move th UW logo down to the bottom centre of the page potentially as you need to show both the 'ball' and the 'University of Worcester' text too.

Client Rachel: Really like your clear ideas and layout for this, and how you’ve kept to the structure of a starter activity, main and plenary. You could use an original document from TNA in each of your starter activities to hook the children in? Love your activities, all of which I think would really appeal to children of this age-group – cut and match activities, making posters etc. Just think about how can incorporate a TNA document either into the activities or as part of the design?

Beth Morgan
I have thought about several different starters and tasks for the children to do within the booklet, one of my favourite ideas is using a timeline with some images and some text with space for the child to add images and text in too. I have started to digitalise my two characters in some sort of similar style that could be used within the booklet.

Tutor Andy: Some lovely potential character imagery here Beth - well done.. Additionally I can see that you've been thinking a lot about activities and how pages link to each other/activities too. Good clear initial roughs, logical activitiy ideas and clear annotation of pages sent.. This work hold a LOT of potential Beth.. I'd like to see more in the way of working to layout grids next week please and maybe as much worked out as you can on paper - colour combos etc..

Client Rachel: Really love this idea and how you’ve planned out the activities carefully – I can see how the original TNA documents could fit into this. Some great activities here, and with the timeline you could include pictures/ text description for them to cut out and put in the right place? Love how the design looks like a document, with the words ‘Top Secret’ – makes it really engaging for children to look at and want to find out more!

Leah Furby
This is where i am at the minute. i have decided to use a baroque style theme throughout the book so that children can colour them in and i think it fits well with the chosen people. However, the lines and details won't be as thin so that children can easily colour them in. There is a mouse throughout the piece, and it is drawn in clothes like the characters to do with the chose person. I chose a wordsearch for Charles Dickens and a Maze game for Florence Nightingale. The font for they key facts will be 'futura'.

Tutor Andy: A lot of potential here Leah.. Your activities have been well throught through, I like the way you're using the rats as the narrator - leading the child around the e-resource and separate activities.. I'd like to see furthe refinement in terms of grids and layout being applied next week please, make sure you can work as much as possible out on paper first and then apply some basic color ideas on paper too if possible..

Client Rachel: Really love the idea of the character of the rat taking the children through the book and I also like the idea that they can colour this booklet in! Maybe you could have some black and white areas, and some already in colour, to keep it eye-catching and appealing, and to encourage the children to colour (they’ll love doing this!) The maze idea for Florence Nightingale is a great activity, as is the word search for Dickens. How can you incorporate a couple of the original TNA images in your design/ work?

Zoe Burns
The two black and white sketches are the game hide and seek then drawn a view and hide different items to do with the people. One to do with noor inayat Khan and other is Walter tull.

The one in color is spot the difference.

I going to do spot the difference with walter tull too bit not drawn him out yet going to do he over this week.

The sketch with have the different items to tell you what you looking for at the bottom. Also going to add facts about them.

Tutor Andy: I can see the spot the difference idea and the 'find the hidden (x)' idea here too Zoe - good but simple possible activities.. What I think we need to see from here is how these pages look on a grid layout, what colours might be used in the b/w pages eventually and what sort of text - headers, bodytext, pic annotations, 'did you know' fact boxes etc might also be added to these A4 pages.. P.S. Nerdy plane fact - Noor Khan was working for the British but you've put an American 'Mustang' fighter in the pic of her - possibly better off to use a Bitish plane - Spitfire or possibly Hurricane if you wish to use one here.

Client Rachel: Really eye-catching illustrations for the spot the difference activities, and I like your idea of including facts about them here too. It would be great to think about how the children can perhaps find out additional information about Noor Khan and Walter Tull, maybe even using a couple of the original TNA documents as starting points for this?

Lucas da Costa Modesta
I’ve just done some notes and rough sketches of how I can organise pages and some ideas.

Tutor Andy: You don't supply a description of what you're aiming for here in a big way Lucas so going on what I can see I think you've got some basic devts underway here.. I'd observe that you're possibly a little behind many of your peers at this point though progress-wise.. To offset this look over some of these ideas here and can I suggest that you develop a page in your sketch pad per page that you want to design - cover, inner pages and back page etc. Ideally we need to see an idea of how this links to grid layouts and columns as well as a clearer idea of what the activity might be/how it works and what titles/subtitles you might use/where the small chunks of information for the children might go on the pages too. Try to get it all worked out in detail on paper - this is what we'd expect to see from a marking perspective so we could see your setp by step developments  her and on your learning journal blog. The worst scenario marking-wise is that a student develops a nice piece of final artwork  but had little or no evidence of the development and thinking leading up to it.. You're a good attender though Lucas and I know that you've been taking in a lot of what we've discussed so I'm confident that you'll go up a gear from here to evolve it further..

Client Rachel: Like the idea of a badge that the children can cut out at the end when the activities are completed. Also like the idea that the activities have a challenge for the children and they have to find out pieces of information to complete them. Would be great to see the next stage of your ideas and how you might include some original TNA document images too.

Florentina Manole
My two people are Nelson Mandela and Charles Dickens. The approach I took in solving this brief is to present them in contrast as well as highlighting their similarities.
The cover reveals the two people holding a protest board, meaning that they are both activists. The inner pages are in contrast, communicating the different historical periods we are looking at: 19th century for Charles Dickens, 20th, and 21st centuries for Nelson Mandela. Therefore, the margins of the spreadsheets for Charles Dickens contain a Victorian pattern and the ones for Nelson Mandela designs specific to South Africa (see picture attached). For Charles Dickens I have chosen a vintage serif typeface inspired from Victorian designs and for Nelson Mandela a sans serif typeface decorated with African patterns.

The character that will interact with the child throughout the book will create an enjoyable experience. For each completed activity, a cheese reward will be unlocked and at the end, the child will receive an award for their hard work.

Tutor Andy: Lovely ideas Florentina.. The rat character who takes you through the book and activities is a good simple idea that we know can really work well. Good that you're looking at styles of fonts for headings - if you feel confident enough these can be hand-drawn to create that slightly child-like version of things.. The 'cheese rewards' idea is great too - you really took on board well the top tips given over about a 'reward' or a badge as a pat on th back for getting activities right.. Like the secret door/book idea too. Maybe some further development's possible here to show how this might work on grids and columns and hopw colour might be used in the A4 pages too.. Some good progress, look forwards to seeing it evolved further next week..

Client Rachel: Really love this idea! Love the rat as the narrator and the idea of the two individuals protesting together on the front page – shows the similarities between them and how they complement each other. I like how the page designs for each character will also be different and match with the time period they come from. The cheese award and celebration of the child’s work at the end is also great idea – children will really respond to this. Perhaps think about how to incorporate some of the TNA document images now and whether they can be linked to some of the activities?

Luke Barton
I've developed most of the layouts as you see in the blog however it can yet be further refined. I've found wide range of research which has kept expanding further with recent blog posts. As for tasks for the children I have 2 which incorporate information about the character. These are shown in the images on the blog.

One thing that i haven't done too much on is on the digital side. There has been some experimentation, however I was unpleased with what I'd produced so I'm going to experiment with cutting out characters with colour on. This isn't in my blog now or sketch book, but I hope to soon develop the concept.

Tutor Andy: What shines through in your ideas is the depth of your research Luke.. From the sketches here I can see that you're evolving cover ideas and I particularly like the illustrated headers treatment - children love creative headings like that. Your activities seem logical and thought through too.. The time line with 'name the place' is a great but simple idea too and you could make that interactive with things they cut out and then stick on if you wished too.. Lots of potential Luke - keep up the good work, it'd be great to see these evolved a little more for next week with grids/layouts in mind, colour possibilites etc too.

Client Rachel: Love second idea for the cover with characters standing back to back – really effective! Great ideas for activities too and how everything will be set out with clear headers. Really looking forward to seeing this evolve further and how TNA original document could be incorporated somewhere in the design or activity?

Beth Brough
I have chosen to do Shakespeare and Florence nightingale. I have included a mixture of written and game tasks for the children to complete to keep them engaged. Little cartoon versions of of Shakespeare and Florence throughout and they will be giving the children hints on how to answer things and giving them extra information on the people.

Tutor Andy: Some simple but good activities here Beth - love the 'dres yourself as though you were Shakespeare idea and 'cut out the clothes to dress Florence' too - great stuff. Your timeline activity and wordsearch are effective too as is your simple maze idea. Next week it'd be really good to see how these potential pages sit within a grid layout and how colour might be applied to the pages as well as  possibly illustrated headings etc.. Some good thinking Beth - lots of potential here.

Client Rachel: Love the use of the cartoon images of Florence Nightingale and Shakespeare guiding children through information and activities. Really great they also give additional help/ hints too! The activities are lovely and really well pitched, particularly like the dressing Florence activity. Maybe think about how original TNA document images could eb used to convey some information about each of the individuals?

Tutor Andy: Your superpower is your amazing characters here Sharon.. Totally bespoke and unique and yet totally engaging too. I can see that you've been thinking about what goes on each page here and the different activities you might use too. Great early experimentation with paint and colour combinations here. You might like to use  'significant people' as a subtitle here in favour of a more pertinent title - maybe (just a tongue in cheek idea) 'the life of Flo and Bill' or 'Florence.. Also you can maybe highlight 'Florence ' and 'William' more on the page next to the figures - maybe in little graphical boxs which are 'scrolls' or similar? While I can see many ideas on your b/w notes for activity pages your colour example isn't that clear yet on the elements that would go on it. Definitely think about what sort og layout grid you'll adhere to - maybe revised imagery could better show that for next week.

Client Rachel: Love the illustrations of Florence Nightingale and Shakespeare – so eye-catching and draw you in! You’ve obviously done a lot of research into Shakespeare – it would be great to see how your activity ideas will evolve, and also how you can include original TNA documents, perhaps in one of your activities?
